Discussion & Documentation

Lorenz Kalbin, a single man, arrived from Lübeck at the port in Oranienbaum on 17 July 1766 aboard a pink named Lev (Lion) under the command of Lieutenant Fyodor Fyodorov.

He settled in the Volga German colony of Balzer on 1 July 1767. He married Elisabeth Habermann. They are recorded on the 1767 census of Balzer in Household No. 86 along with Elisabeth's brothers (Philipp, age 12; Johann Ernst, age 7).

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Lorenz Kalbin was a weaver while the 1767 census records that he was a farmer.

Both the Oranienbaum passenger list and the 1767 census records that Lorenz Kalbin came from the German region of Hanau.
