Johann Karl, a farmer, his wife Anna, mother-in-law Elisabeth Knoll, and her sister Anna Dorothea Knoll arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 4 July 1766 aboard the English frigate Love & Unity under the command of Skipper Thomas Fairfax.

Johannes Carl, his wife Anna Elisab., and son Joh. Adam (born en route) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

Johannes Karl, his wife Elisabeth, mother-in-law Elisabeth Knoll, and mother-in-law's sister Anna Dorothea are recorded on the 1767 census of Paulskaya in Household No. 38. They had settled in Paulskaya on 7 June 1767.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Johann Karl came from the German region of Darmstadt. The 1767 census records that he came from the German village of Eppenrod.
