Johann Bernhardt Kirschbaum, son of Johann Peter Kirschbaum & Agnesia Meissenheimer, was born 19 October 1707 in Hochstätten. He married Catharina Margaretha Bender on 2 February 1736.
The baptisms of four of their children are recorded in the parish register of Hochstätten: (1) Maria Magdalena, baptized 27 August 1738; (2) Johann Nicolaus, baptized 22 April 1753; (3) Anna Maria, baptized 10 March 1756; and (4) Maria Elisabeth, baptized 7 August 1761.
Bernhard Kirschbaum, a farmer, his wife Katharina Margaretha, and children (Maria Magdalena, age 23; Johann Nikolaus, age 14; Anna Maria, age 10, Maria Elisabeth, age 5½) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 8 August 1766 aboard the Danish galliot Engel Rafael under the command of Skipper Ehlert Kongsted.
Leonhard [sic] Kirschbaum, his wife Catharina Margaretha, and children (Maria Magdalena, age 23; Nicolaus, age 14; Anna Maria, age 11; Maria Elisabeth, age 5) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.
Widow Margaretha Kirschbaum and her children (Nikolaus, age 14; Anna Maria, age 11; Maria Elisabeth, age 8; Maria Louisa, age 5) are recorded on the 1767 census of Frank in Household No. 113. They had settled there on 1 September 1767. [The youngest, Maria Louisa, must be the daughter of another family as she does not appear with the Kirschbaums arriving in Oranienbaum or on the transport list.]
Son Nikolaus Kirschbaum and his family are recorded on the 1798 census of Kolb in Household No. Ko39.
Eldest daughter Maria Magdalena Kirschbaum is recorded on the 1798 census of Kolb in Household No. Ko02 as the wife of Friedrich Schreiner.
The death of Friedrich Kirschbaum, son of Nikolaus Kirschbaum, in 1829 is recorded on the 1834 census of Kolb in Household No. 41.
The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Johann Bernhardt Kirschbaum came from the German region of the Pfalz. The 1767 census records that he came from the German village of Hostet? in the Kurpfalz region.
There are no known surviving male lines of this family among the Volga German colonies.
