Margaretha Klein, the widow of Thomas Klein, and her children (Johann Michael, age 24, Johann Jakob, age 17; Maria Margaretha, age 14; Maria Kunigunda, age 10; Maria Elisabeth; age 4) immigrated to Denmark (Schleswig-Holstein), arriving in the city of Schleswig on 9 May 1761.
Son Johann Jakob, a farmer, deserted the Danish colonies on 27 June 1764 and joined the migration to Russia.
He settled in the Volga German colony of Dreispitz on 16 September 1766 and is recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 17 along with his family.
The Eichhorns record that this Klein family came from the German village of "Spock, Unteramt Staffort, Oberamt Karlsruhe, Markgrafschaft Baden-Durlach." The 1767 census records that Jakob Klein came from the German village of Graben in the Durlach region.
