Discussion & Documentation:

There are two Klotzbach families that settled in the Volga German colonies. They are believed to be father and son.

(1) Matthias Klotzbach (age 34), a farmer, his wife Christina, and children (Konrad, age 12; Just, age 10; Anna, age 6; Maria, 3) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 12 September 1766 aboard an English frigate under the command of Skipper Adam Beerfeier.

Mathias Klotzbach, his wife Christina, and children (Conrad, age 12; Jost Heinrich, age 10¼; Anan Maria, age 3) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

They settled in the Volga German colony of Philippsfeld on 3 August 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 28. The 1767 census also records that the Klotzbach family relocated to the colony of Näb in 1768.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Mattias Klotzbach came from the German region of Hessen. The 1767 census records that Matthias Klotzbach came from the German village of Ketzeman in Hessen.

(2) Matthias Klotzbach (age 54), a farmer, and his family are recorded on the appendix to the 1767 census of Nieder-Monjou in Household No. 4. A note on this document records that they relocated to the colony of Näb in 1768.

The 1767 census records that this Matthias Klotzbach came from the German village of Kessemich.
