Discussion & Documentation

Lorenz Kuhn, a cobbler (Schuhmacher), and his wife Anna Margaretha arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum aboard the Russian ship Strelna on 9 August 1766.

Lorentz Kuhn and his wife Anna Margreta are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767 along with a note that Anna Margreta died en route.

Anna Margaretha died during the journey to the colonies, and Lorenz remarried to Gertrude, the widow of Christoph Weitzel. [See Weitzel Family.]

Lorenz and Gertrude settled in the Volga German colony of Norka on 26 August 1767. They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 178.

The 1767 census records that Lorenz Kuhn came from the German district of Isenburg. Research by Alexander Baumung reveals Lorenz Kuhn came from the German village of Hettersroth.
