Discussion & Documentation

Gottlieb Künzel, a joiner, his wife Maria, and children (Immanuel, age 15¼; Johanna, age 4; Maria, age 1½) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 9 June 1766 aboard the ship Mann und Frau (Husband & Wife) under the command of Skipper Daniel Berg.

Gottlieb Künzel, a joiner (Tischler), his wife Maria Sophia, and son Immanuel Gottlieb (age 14) are recorded on the 1767 census of Warenburg in Household No. 58. They had arrived in Warenburg on 12 May 1767.

Both the Oranienbaum passenger list and the 1767 census record that Gottlieb Künzel came from the German village of Schmiedeberg.

There are no known surviving male lines of this Künzel family among the Volga German colonies.

[The Plehve translation of the 1767 census erroneously records this surname as Kessler.]
