Lehmann (Bettinger / Kaneau / Susannental)

There are 4 Lehmann families that travelled together to Russia. They arrived together from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 10 August 1766 aboard a ship under the command of Skipper Nikolaus Peter Pink.

Their relationship to each other, if any, needs further research.

(1) Widow Maria Mekler [sic] and her children (Maria, age 14; Martin, age 13; Gottlieb, age 11) arrived in Oranienbaum.

Maria Lehmann and her children (Maria, age 14; Martin, age 13; Gottlieb, age 11) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767 along with a a note that Gottlieb died en route.

Martin Lehmann (age 14) and his sister Maria (age 15) are recorded on the 1767 census of Bettinger in Household No. 19 along with their stepfather Jakob Hildebrandt.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Maria Mekler [sic] came from the German village of Oranienbaum. The 1767 census does not record from where the Lehmann children came.

(2) The following marriage is recorded in the parish register in Coswig:

"den 23 März 1766 ist Johann Gottfried Lehmann, Kaiserlicher Russischer Kolonist im Katharinen Lehn, verstorbenen Johann Martin Lehmanns Tagelöhners in dem so genannten rothen Hause nachgelassener eheleiblicher älteste Sohn und Jungfrau Maria Elisabeth Schmiedin verstorbenen Meisters Johann Gottfried Schmids, Bürger und Schumachers in Oranienbaum nachgelassene eheliche älteste Tochter in hiesiger Kirche eingesegnet und getraut worden."

[Translation: "On 23 March 1766 the marriage of Johann Gottfried Lehmann, Imperial Russian colonists and son of the deceased daylaborer from Rothehaus, and virgin Maria Elisabeth Schmied, eldest daughter of Johann Gottfried Schmied, the deceased citizen and master cobbler of the Oranienbaum estates, was consecrated in the local parish church."

Johann Gottfried Lehmann from Oranienbaum, son of the day laborer (Tagelöhners) Martin Lehmann from Rothehaus (bei Möhlau) married in Coswig to Maria Elisabeth Schmidt.

Gottfried Lehmann, a farmer, and his wife Maria arrived in Oranienbaum.

Gottfriedt Lehmann and his wife Johanna are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

They settled in the Volga German colony of Bettinger on 3 August 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 21.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Gottfried Lehmann came from the German village of Oranienbaum. The 1767 census records that he came from the German region of Dessau.

(3) Christoph Lehmann, a single man, arrived in Oranienbaum.

Christoph Lehmann is recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

He settled in the Volga German colony of Susannental on 3 August 1767 and is recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 30 along with his new wife Maria.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Christoph Lehmann was a farmer from the German region of Krossen. The 1767 census records that he was a Prussian Canonier (preußischer Kanonier) from Krossen.

(4) Gottlieb Heimann [sic], a farmer, and his wife Maria arrived in Oranienbaum.

Joh. Gottlieb Lehmann and his wife Maria Elisabeth are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767 along with a note that Maria Elisabeth died en route.

Gottlieb Lehmann, a teacher (Lehrer), and his [new] wife Eva are recorded on the 1767 census of Paulskaya in Household No. 7 along with a note that they relocated to the colony of Kaneau in 1768. They had settled in Paulskaya on 5 March 1767.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Gottlieb Helmann [sic] came from the German region of Sachsen (Saxony). The 1767 census records that Gottlieb Lehmann came from the German village of Zeitz.
