Discussion & Documentation

[Karl] Gottfried Lühr [sic], a farmer, his wife Maria, and children (Ludwig, age 18; Wilhelmina, age 4; Johannes, age 2) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 24 July 1766 aboard a barque named Georg under the command of Skipper Adam Bairnsfair.

Gottfried Luley, his wife Maria, and children (Ludewig, age 18; Wilhelmina, age 4; Johannes, age 2½) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

Karl Gottfried Luley, a farmer, his wife Henrietta [sic], and children (Wilhelm, age 19; Wilhelmina, age 9; Nikolaus, age 1-week) are recorded on an appendix to the 1767 census of Beauregard in Household No. 68 . A note on the 1767 census records that the family resettled to the Volga German colony of Katharinenstadt in 1768.

The 1776 Katharinenstadt Land Register records the widow Maria Wilhelmina Luley (age 40) remarried to Johann Sabelfeld (age 24) and two Luley children in the household (Ludwig Wilhelm, age 25 [who is absent]; Wilhelmina, age 15).

The Movement Tables accompanying the 1798 census of Katharinenstadt record that Wilhelmina, daughter of Johannes Luley, married in Penza to foreigner Guitee [?].

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Gottfried Lühr [sic] came from the German region of Waldeck while the 1767 census records that Karl Gottfried Lulea [sic] came from the German village of Alenkrinhausen [?]. The 1776 Katharinenstadt Land Register records that the Luley children came from the German village of Mengeringhausen.

There are no known surviving male lines of this family among the Volga German colonies.
