A couple of descendants of Johannes Machlaid of Zwingenberg were among the Volga German colonists.

Johannes Machlaid, son of Hanß, was buried on 24 July 1727 in Zwingenberg (died at the age of 75 years minus 9 weeks). He married 1 February 1681 to Anna Veronica Wenck, daughter of Johann Philipp Wenck & Magdalena Maier. She had been baptized 15 August 1665 in Zwingenberg.

The baptisms of the following children born to Johannes Machlaid & Anna Veronica Wenck are recorded in the parish register of Zwingenberg: (1) Anna Maria, baptized 5 February 1682; (2) Johann Philipp, baptized 17 February 1685; (3) Philippina Dorothea, baptized 9 November 1688, died 28 January 1835; (4) Maria Apollonia, baptized 22 November 1691, died 15 January 1766; and (5) [a] Johann Velten, born 28 October 1694, baptized 30 October 1694, died 15 March 1736.

Anna Veronica Machlaid née Wenck died 12 September 1713 in Zwingenberg.

Johannes Machlaid has three additional children with Anna Euphrosina Hechler: (1) [b] Anna Catharina, born 20 February 1697, baptized 21 February 1697; (2) Maria Elisabetha, born 9 October 1700, baptized 12 October 1700; buried 21 August 1731; and (3) Johann Jacob, born 18 January 1703, baptized 21 January 1703, died 13 August 1703. 

[a] Johann Veltin Machlaid (born 1694) married on 19 November 1718 in Zwingenberg to Maria Catharina Kissel, daughter of Johann Valentin Kissel & Anna Margaretha Nicolay. She had been born 4 October 1695 in Zwingenberg.

The baptisms of the following children born to Johann Veltin Machlaid & Maria Catharina Kissel are recorded in the parish register of Zwingenberg: (1) Dorothea Catharina, born 11 May 1719, baptized 12 May 1719; (2) Maria Magdalena, born 6 June 1720, baptized 7 June 1720, buried 9 July 1721; (3) Georg Andreas, born 22 December 1721, baptized 25 December 1721, buried 29 Januayr 1723; (4) Eva, born 30 March 1723, baptized 2 April 1723, died 25 February 1785 [in Zwingenberg]; (5) Johann Georg, born 27 September 1724, baptized 29 September 1724, died 23 June 1775 [in Zwingenberg]; (6) Johann Wilhelm, born 2 May 1727, baptized 3 May 1727; and (7) Johann Reinhard, born 27 December 1728, baptized 28 December 1728, died 26 January 1794 [in Zwingenberg].

Johann Wilhelm Machlaid (born 1727) married in Zwingenberg on 28 September 1748 to Anna Elisabetha Becker, daughter of Johann Georg Becker & Anna Philipp. She had been born 26 September 1732 in Zwingenberg. The baptisms of the following children born to Johann Wilhelm Machlaid & Anna Elisabetha Becker are recorded in the parish register of Zwingenberg: (1) Maria Catharina, born 9 December 1750, baptized 12 December 1750, died 5 January 1751; (2) Anna Margaretha, born 4 February 1752, baptized 6 February 1752, died 30 March 1835 [in Zwingenberg]; (3) Johann Adam, born 31 August 1754, baptized 1 September 1754; (4) Anna Elisabetha, born 25 July 1757, died 13 July 1826 [in Zwingenberg]; (5) Anna Catharina, born 3 March 1760; (6) Anna Maria, born 22 March 1762, died 25 March 1762; and (7) [unnamed child] stillborn 9 January 1764.

Anna Elisabetha Machlaid née Becker died 12 June 1764 in Zwingenberg. Johann Wilhelm Machlaid remarried on 8 November 1764 to Elisabetha Vogler. They had one unnamed child who was stillborn on 1 September 1765.

Elisabetha Machlaid née Vogler died 6 November 1765 in Zwingenberg. Johann Wilhelm Machlaid remarried on 18 February 1766 in Zwingenberg to Sophia Hamann, daughter of Johann Adam Hamann & Anna Maria Herpel. She had been born on 17 September 1737 in Bickenbach.

According to the parish register, Johann Wilhelm Machleit (spelled Macheleuth in the Amt Zwingenberg Mannschaftsregister) left secretly, and without permission departed for Russia in 1766, taking one son and one daughter, and leaving two daughters behind.

Widower Johann Machleid and his son Johann (age 12) arrived from Lübeck at the port in Oraninenbaum on 12 September 1766 aboard the Love & Unity under the command of Thomas Fairfax.

Joh.Wilhelm Machleid, his [new] wife Catharina, and son Joh. Adam (age 12) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

Wilhelm Machleit, a farmer, his wife Katharina, and children (Johann Adam, age 15; Sophia Elisabeth, age 3-months) are recorded on an appendix tothe 1767 census of Paulskaya in Household No. 4.

They are recorded on the 1798 census of Kind in Household No. Kd13.

[b] Anna Catharina Machlaid (born 1697) married 7 November 1719 in Zwingenberg to Johann Wilhelm Bischof, son of Johann Michael Bischof & Regina Elisabetha Magdalena Oswald. [See Bischof Family.]

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Johann Machleid came from the German region of Hessen. The 1767 census records that Wilhelm Machleit came from the German village of Schwindeberg [Zwengenberg].
