Wilhelm Mai, a hat maker (Hutmacher), his wife Dorothea, and children (Maria, age 11; Viktoria, age 9; Johannes, age 6; Katharina, age 1-month) are recorded on the 1767 census of Katharinenstadt in Household No. 49. They had settled there on 5 March 1767.
Wilhelm's son Johannes is believed to be the same Johannes who is recorded moving to Katharinenstadt from Zug in 1792 and is subsequently recorded on the 1798 census of Katharinenstadt in Household No. Ka076.
The death of Johannes Mai in 1834 is recorded on the 1834 census of Katharinenstadt in Household No. 217.
The 1767 census records that Wilhelm Mai came from the German village of Grefrath.
There are no known surviving male lines of this Mai family among the Volga German colonies.
