Matz (Soldier)
Martin Matz was born in approximately 1788, probably in France. He served in Napoleon's army and fought against the Russians. He was captured by the Russians, and in 1812, was settled in the Volga German colony of Katharinenstadt. His first wife was Dorothea Karolina Houbre (Ubert) and his second wife was Dorothea Weltz. He died in Katharinenstadt on 9 September 1854.
He appears on the 1834 Katharinenstadt Census in Household No. 156 [were surname is recorded as Martz] and on the 1850 Katharinenstadt Census in Household No. 216. His death is recorded on the 1857 Katharinenstadt Census in Household No. 235.
