Discussion & Documentation
Michael Mekler, a mason (Maurer), and his daughter Elisabeth (age 18) are recorded on the 1767 census of Lauwe in Household No. 52 along with a note that his wife had died during the journey from Oranienbaum to the Volga region. Michael and his daughter had settled in Lauwe on 5 September 1767, and a note on the 1767 census records that they relocated to the colony of Kukkus in 1768.
The 1767 census records that Michael Mekler came from the German village of Mekerkingen [?] in the Wittenberg region.
There are no known surviving male lines of this family among the Volga German colonies.
