Johann Gottlieb Melzer, a tailor (Schneider), and his family settled in the Volga German colony of Holstein on 26 May 1765. They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 13.

The 1767 census records that Johann Gottlieb Melzer came from the German village of Kretz in Sachsen (Saxony).
