Johann Wilhelm Michaelis settled in the Volga German colony of Katharinenstadt on 2 December 1766. He is recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 173 along with a note that his wife and 4 children remained back in Nordhausen.

The 1767 census records that Johann Wilhelm Michaelis came from the German village of Nordhausen in the region of Thüringen.

There are no known surviving male lines of this Michaelis family among the Volga German colonies.
