Discussion & Documentation

Eloiß and Anna Barbara Michel had the following children, each born in the German village of Fischborn: (1) Johann Adam, born 27 June 1759 and (2) Eva, born 6 June 1763. Their baptisms are recorded in the parish records of Unterreichenbach. The family immigrated to Russia.

Johann [Eloiß] Michel, a farmer, his wife Anna, and children (Johann [Adam], age 10; and Anna, age 4] arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 19 July 1766 aboard the snow-brig named Christina under the command of Skipper Jacob Stappenberg.

Eloiß died after arriving in Russia, and Anna Margaretha remarried to Johannes Schneider. They and the two Michel children settled in the Volga German colony of Huck on 1 July 1767, and are recorded there on the 1767 Census in Household No. 47.

Johannes & Barbara Schneider are recorded on the 1798 Census of Huck in Household No. Hk09. Michael Adam Bless is actually Adam Michel, Barbara's son from her first marriage [why the surname of Bless is recorded is unknown; perhaps it comes from their father's first name of Eloiß]. [An Elisabeth Bless is recorded on the 1798 census of Huck in Household No. Hk75. It is unknown whether she connects to this family.]

Adam Michel and his family continue on the 1811 census of Huck in Household No. 9 and on the 1834 census of Huck in Household No. 25.

The Oranienabum passenger list records that Johann Michel came from the German region of Isenburg.
