Discussion & Documentation

Johann Christoph Morlang, a son of Johann Ludwig Morlang, married Anna Margaretha Schmidt, daughter of Johann Peter & Maria Margaretha Schmidt, on 26 February 1747 in the Lutheran Church in Weiler Martinstein. [Today, Weiler bei Monzingen and Martinstein are two separate municipalities about 2.3 kilometers apart, and 37 kilometers southeast of Bad Kreuznach.] Anna Margaretha had been born there on 7 January 1726 and baptized on 10 January 1726 in the same church.

They had eight known children, of whom seven were born in Weiler Martinstein: (1) Johann Peter, born on 3 January 1748 and baptized on 6 January 1748; (2) Anna Elisabetha, born on 2 July 1749 and baptized on 6 July 1749; (3) Maria Elisabetha, born on 27 June 1750, and baptized on 29 June 1750; (4) Georg Philipp, born on 26 May 1754 and baptized on 30 May 1754; (5) Maria Christina, born on 16 June 1756 and baptized on 19 June 1756; (6) Maria Julianna, born on 12 October 1763 and baptized on 14 October 1763; and (8) Karl Friedrich, born on 13 February 1766 and baptized on 16 February 1766.

Johann Christoph Morlang and his family immigrated to Russia, arriving in the Volga German colony of Walter on 25 August 1767. The family is recorded there on the 1767 Census in Household No. 52.

By the time of 1798 Walter census, son Johann Peter is recorded in Household No. Wt018, but he and his family are living in Riebensdorf, about 300 miles west from Saratov, where he is a schoolteacher. Son Georg Philipp is still registered in Walter in Household No. Wt074; and son Georg Karl is recorded in Household No. Wt112.
