Discussion & Documentation

[Johannes] Franz Nachbar, a single man, arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 25 July 1766 aboard the snow-brig named Maria Sophia under the command of Skipper Johann Bauert.

He settled in the Volga German colony of Preuss and is recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 140 along with a note that he is in Saratov working for "Schankwirt Ostermeier."

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Franz Nachbar was a joiner while the 1767 census records that he was a carpenter (Tischler).

Both the Oranienbaum passenger list and the 1767 census record that Johannes Franz Nachbar came from the German region of Trier.

There are no known surviving male lines of this family among the Volga German colonies.
