Discussion & Documentation

Johann Caspar Roth was born 28 May 1726 in Lollar. He married there on 19 May 1751 to Anna Elisabetha Erb. She was baptized 4 November 1732 in Großen-Buseck.

They have 4 known children, each born in Lollar: (1) Elisabetha, born 20 April 1753, died 20 May 1753; (2) Heinrich Balthasar, born 21 June 1754; (3) Johann Georg, born 6 February 1757; and (4) Georg Ludwig, born 10 October 1759.

The father, Johann Caspar, died 26 January 1761 in Lollar, and his widow remarried on 20 May 1762 in Lollar to Johann Ludwig Braun, son of Heinrich Braun of Blasbach near Solms. They had one son, Johann Heinrich, who was baptized 28 August 1763 in Lollar.

Ludwig Braun, his wife, their son Johann Heinrich, and the three surviving Roth sons immigrated to Russia. They arrived from Lübeck on 25 July 1766 on board the snow-brig named Maria Sophia under the command of skipper Johann Bauert.

Heinrich [Balzer] Roth (age 13) and his brothers (Johann, age 9; Georg, age 5) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 25 July 1766 aboard the snow-brig Maria Sophia under the command of Skipper Johann Bauer along with their mother and stepfather, Ludwig Braun.

Ludwig Braun, his wife Anna Elisabeth, and children (Heinr. Balthasar [Roth], age 14; Joh. Georg [Roth], age 12; Georg Ludwig [Roth], age 7 Joh. Heinrich, age 4; Philipp Magnus, born en route) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

They settled in the Volga German colony of Warenburg on 12 May 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 88.

The 1767 census records that Heinrich Balzer Roth came from the German village of Wintersdorf in Sachsen (Saxony).
