Mattias Rathenburger [sic], a farmer, his wife Barbara, and children (Katharina, age 25; Andreas, age 16) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 14 June 1766 aboard the ship named Die Neue Fortuna (The New Fortune) under the command of Skipper Ahrens Steingraber.
Matthias Rothenburger [sic] is recorded on a list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.
Mattias Rothenberger (age 51), a saltpeter merchant (Salpeterseider), his wife Karolina (age 35), and stepson Andreas [Schäfer] (age 17) are recorded on the 1767 census of Warenburg in Household No. 60. They had arrived in Warenburg on 12 May 1767. [See Schäfer Family.]
The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Mathias Rothenberger was a farmer from the German region of Usingen while the 1767 census records that he was a procurer of saltpeter (Salpetersieder) from the German village of Frumet [?] in the Wertheim region.
