Matthias Schäfer, a farmer, settled in the Volga German colony of Louis on 14 August 1766.  He is recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 50 along with his new bride, widow Anna Schlosser (maiden name Kraus according to the 1798 census) and her children.

Mattias Schäfer and his family are recorded on the 1798 census of Louis in Household No. Ls22.

The death of Mattias Schäfer in 1824 is recorded on the 1834 census of Louis in Household No. 123.

Martin Schäfer, son of Mattias Schäfer, and his family are recorded on the 1834 census of Louis in Household No. 35.

The death of Martin Schäfer in 1840 is recorded on the 1850 census of Louis in Household No. 48.

The 1767 census records that Matthias Schäfer came from the German village of Keller.
