Georg Peter Schäfer, a farmer, and his family arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 12 September 1766 aboard an English frigate under the command of Skipper Adam Beerfeier.

They settled in the Volga German colony of Susannental on 3 August 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Households No. 6 & 7.

In 1790, Johannes Schäfer moved from Susannental to Meinhard. In 1792, Johann Georg Schäfer moved from Susannental to Meinhard.

The 1767 census records that this Schäfer family came from the German village of Reckenroth.
