Mattias Schönberger and his family settled in the Volga German colony of Chasselois on 2 August 1766. Mattias Schönberger, a farmer, his wife Anna, and children (Peter, age 18; Jakob, age 15; Anna Katharina, age 13; Michael, age 11) are recorded there on the 1767 census in Households No. 8 & 9.

Following the destruction of Chasselois, the Schönberger family resettled to the colony of Mariental.

Jakob Schönberger from Chasselois and his family are recorded on the 1798 census of Mariental in Household No. Mt61.

[Anna] Katharina Dack née Schönberger from Chasselois and her family are recorded on the 1798 census of Graf in Household No. Gf14.

Michael Schönberger from Chasselois and his family are recorded on the 1798 census of Louis in Household No. Ls41.

The 1767 census records that Matthias Schönberger came from the French village of Sierck.
