Discussion & Documentation

The baptisms of the following daughters born to Johann Valentin & Margaretha Schaff [sic] are recorded in the parish register of Altenschlirf: (1) Anna Catharina, born 21 December 1733 [birth recorded as illegitimate, but father is recorded, so parents must have married after the birth]; (2) Gertrude, born 29 September 1737; (3) Julianna, born 11 September 1740; and (4) Anna Barbara, born 28 September 1743.

[Johann] Jakob Keib married Gerdrauth Schaaff on 10 May 1766 in Büdingen.

Johann Valentin Schaaf, a farmer, and is [daughter] Anna Julianna arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 15 September 1766 aboard the galliot Johannes under the command of Skipper Stahl along with his daughter Gertrude and her husband Jakob Keib.

Valentin Schaff and his daughter Anna Catharina [sic] (age 20) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767 along with his daughter Gertrud [sic] and her husband Jacob Kaip [sic]. A note on the transport list records that Valentin died in route.

Julianna Schaff is believed to be recorded on the 1798 census of Hussenbach in Household No. Hs007 along with her husband Heinrich Weitzel and family.

The Büdingen marriage register records that Gerdrauth Schaaff is from "Altenschlerff."  The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Johann Valentin Schaff came from the German region of Riedesel.

There are no known surviving male lines of this Schaaf family among the Volga German colonies.
