Discussion & Documentation

Georg Schäfer, a farmer, his wife Elisabeth, and daughters (Eva, age 4; Maria, age ½) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 11 June 1766 aboard a ship named Der Junge Heinrich (The Young Henry) under the command of Skipper Heinrich Niemann. A note records that daughter Maria had died on 8 June 1766.

Georg Schaffer [sic] is recorded on a list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

Johann Georg Schäfer (age 45), a barrel maker (Fassbinder), and his wife Elisabeth Katharina (age 31) are recorded on the 1767 census of Warenburg in Household No. 62. They had arrived in Warenburg on 12 May 1767.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Georg Schäfer came from the German region of Usingen. The 1767 census records that Johann Georg Schäfer came from the German region of Nassau-Usingen.

There are no known surviving male lines of this Schäfer family among the Volga German colonies.
