Discussion & Documentation

Johann Gottfried Schirgin was born in approximately 1792 in the Netherlands [?].

He had been a tanner before serving as a non-commissioned officer in the Hussar Regiment of Napoleon's Army and fought against the Russians.

He was captured by the Russians.

Milovidov records that as of 1814 his father, mother, two brothers, and two sisters were still living in the German village of Grevenbroich.

He was settled in the Volga German colony of Paulskaya assigned to the household of Peter Stark.

He is recorded there on the 1834 census of Paulskaya in Household No. 129 and on the 1850 census of Paulskaya in Household No. 159 along with a note that he had died there in 1847.

Milovidov records that Johann Gottfried Schirgin came from the German town of Gräfenburg [Grevenbroich] near Köln.
