Johannes Schmat, a farmer, his wife Margaretha, and daughter Elisabeth (age 15) are recorded on the 1767 census of Paulskaya in Household No. 74. They had settled there on 23 July 1767.

The 1767 census records that Johannes Schmat came from the German village of Alsfeld.

There are no known surviving male lines of this family among the Volga German colonies.
