Discussion & Documentation

Joachim Schmidt, a farmer, his wife Barbara, and children (Barbara, age 16; Johann, age 8) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 8 August 1766 aboard the Danish galliot Engel Rafael under the command of Skipper Ehlert Kongsted.

Joachim died and his widow remarried to Johann Joseph Jaudel. They settled in the Volga German colony of Brabander on 26 June 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 90.

They are recorded on the 1798 census of Brabander in Household No. Bn18.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Joachim Schmidt came from the German region of Pfalz.
