Discussion & Documentation:

Johann Christoph Schmidt, son of Heinrich Schmidt, was born in 1725 in Sprendlingen, Hessen, Germany. He married Susanna Maria Blechschmid, daughter of the deceased Anthon Blechschmid and his wife Justina, on 15 April 1749 in Sprendlingen.

Christoph Schmidt, a farmer, his wife Susanna, and children (Anna Margaretha, age 18; Maria Elisabeth, age 16; Katharina Elisabeth, age 12; Anna Maria, age 8; Susanna, age 4; Johann Georg, age 2) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 13 September 1766 aboard the hooker Die Jungfer Dietrika under the command of Skipper Christian Korsholm.

Christoph Schmidt, his wife Susanna, and children (Anna Margaretha, age 20; Maria Elisabeth, age 16; Catharina, age 12; Anna Maria, age 8; Susanna, age 3; Joh. Georg, age 2) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767 along with a note that daughter Susanna died en route.

Christian [sic] Schmidt and his family settled in the Volga German colony of Frank in 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 61.

Anthon Blechschmid was born about 1680 and died 15 February 1736 in Sprendlingen. Anthon left a wife and 8 children.

The 1767 census records that Christian [sic] Schmidt came from the German village of Sprendlingen in the Isenburg region.
