Schmidt (Köhler-2)*
The parish register of Salmünster records on 6 February 1758 the marriage of Christoph Schmitt from Romsthal to Elisabeth Wigand from Salmünster.
Their baptism of their daughter Maria Martha Schmitt is recorded on the Salmünster parish register on 23 November 1758. She had been born in Romsthal.
Christoph Schmidt, a wheelwright (Wagenbauer), his wife Maria Elisabeth, and daughter Maria Martha (age 7) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 9 August 1766 aboard the pink Novaya Dvinka under the command of Lieutenant Perepechin.
They settled in the Volga German colony of Köhler on 21 August 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 56.
Widower Christoph Schmidt is recorded on the 1798 census of Köhler in Household No. Kl48 along with a note that he is living with his brother in Hildmann.
The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Christoph Schmidt came from Austria while the 1767 census records that he came from the German village of Salmünster.
There are no known surviving male lines of this Schmidt family among the Volga German colonies.
