Widow Maria Schmidt, a farmer, settled in the Volga German colony of Louis on 14 June 1766 and is recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 33 along with her stepson Johannes Wals.
The 1767 census records that Maria Schmidt came from the German village of Grünsfeld in the region of Würzburg.
There are no known surviving male lines of this Schmidt family among the Volga German colonies.
