Michael Schmidt, a farmer, and his wife Angela settled in the Volga German colony of Chasselois on 2 August 1766. They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 24 along with a note that they resettled to the colony of Mariental in 1768.

The 1767 census records that Michael Schmidt came from the German village of Saarburg in the Trier region.
