Discussion & Documentation

Zacharias Schneider, the illegitimate son of Andreas Schneider from Schlechtenwegen, was born in Frischborn 18 October 1716. He married Sophia Dorothea Oderwald/Odenwald.

The births/baptisms of all of their children are recorded in the parish register of Frischborn, including son Johann Henrich (1749-1753) who died before they departed for Russia. Father Zacharias Schneider died in Frischborn on 14 April 1763.

Widow Sophia Schneider and her children (Johann, age 19; Heinrich, age 12; Lorenz, age 10) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 19 July 1766 aboard the barque named Fortitudo under the command of Skipper John Scott.

They settled in the Volga German colony of Krasnoyar on 20 July 1767. The surviving children are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 46 along with their sister Anna Maria and her husband Sebastian Pabst.

The marriage register in Büdingen records that Sebastian Bapst [sic] from Langenschwartz & [Anna] Maria Schneider from F[r]ischborn were married on 14 May 1766.

The 1798 census of Enders records Heinrich Schneider from Krasnoyar in Household No. En01.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Sophia Schneider came from the German region of Riedesel. The 1767 census records that Johannes Schneider came from the German area of Alsfeld in the Darmstadt region. The Büdingen marriage register records that Anna Maria Schneider was from Fischborn, but it is Frischborn that is in the area of Alsfeld which was historically part of the Riedesel estate.
