Discussion & Documentation:

There are several Schneider families that arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 2 July 1772 aboard a ship under the command of Skipper Hartwig. They settled in the Volga German colony of Pobochnaya on 4 July 1773.

One of these families is Samuel Schneider who married Maria Katharina Kalckhoff, daughter of Johann Ludwig & Anna Kalckhoff. She had been born 19 February 1732 and baptized 24 February 1732 in Eckartshausen.

The births of three children to Samuel Schneider are recorded in the parish register of Eckartshausen: (1) Anna Dorothea, born 5 June 1761, baptized 7 June 1761, died 4 August 1761; (2) Johann Paul, born 25 January 1765, baptized 3 February 1765; and (3) Johannes, born 20 October 1766, baptized 26 October 1766.

Samuel Schneider, his wife Maria Katharina Kalkopf, and sons (Johann Paul, age 8; Johann, age 6) are recorded on a 1773 list of Pobochnaya settlers (No. 3).

Samuel Schneider and his family are recorded on the 1798 census of Pobochnaya in Household No. Pb02.

Son Paul Schneider and his family are recorded on the 1798 census of Pobochnaya in Household No. Pb08.
