Discussion & Documentation

Johann Anton Schönerling, a farmer, and his wife Eva arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 22 July 1766 aboard a barque named Der Junge Mattias (The Young Mattias) under the command of Skipper Johann Gottfried Selander.

They settled in the Volga German colony of Dehler on 1 July 1767. Anton died on 31 October 1767. Eva is recorded on the 1767 census of Dehler in Household No. 44.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Johann Anton Schönerling came from the German region of Mainz. The 1767 census records that Eva Schönerling came from the German village of Oberschgogen [?] in the Kurmainz area.

There are no known surviving male lines of this family among the Volga German colonies.
