Johann Kaspar Spiess, a single farmer, arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 9 August 1766 aboard the pink Novaya Dvinka under the command of Lieutenant Perepechin.

He settled in the Volga German colony of Krasnoyar on 20 July 1767 and is recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 97 along with his new bride Anna Margaretha.

The 1767 census records that Kaspar Spiess came from the German village of Alsfeld in the Darmstadt region.
