Michael Steigerwald was born 30 June 1716 in the German village of Partenstein. He married there on 26 May 1740 to Anna Christine Imhof. She was likewise born in Partenstein on 2 December 1719. They have seven known children, each born in Partenstein: (1) Johann Jost, born 5 October 1740; (2) Johann Conrad, born 1 October 1746; (3) Johann Sebastian, born in 1749, died 11 March 1757; (4) Peter, born 24 April 1762; (5) Gertraud, born 20 February 1752; (6) Anna Veronika, born 16 January 1755; and (7) Anna Maria, born 19 October 1758.
Michael Steigerwald, a farmer, and his family (including his sister-in-law, Gertraud Imhof) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 19 July 1766 aboard the barque named Fortitudo under the command of Skipper John Scott.
Michael, his wife, and son Conrad died after arrival in Russia. The surviving children settled in the Volga German colony of Krasnoyar on 20 July 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 40.
The 1767 census records that the Steigerwald family came from the German village of Lohr in the district of Mainz. The village of Partenstein is located north of the town of Lohr am Main.
