Discussion & Documentation:

Johann Peter Steinmetz, son of Heinrich & Anna Elisabeth Steinmetz, married in the Catholic Church in Heldenbergen on 17 July 1764 to Anna Maria Döll, daughter of Erasmus Döll [See Döll Family]. [The marriage register records that they were both Lutheran.]

Anna Maria Döll had been baptized in Heckenbergheim [today called Bergheim] on 22 March 1741.

Johann Peter Steinmetz and Anna Maria Döll had one child whose baptism is recorded in the parish register of Heckenbergheim: Johann Jacob, born 12 November 1765, baptized 17 November 1765.

The lists of recruiter Johann Facius record that on 13 February 1766, gathering at Aufenau to move to Russia, is the family of Johannes Steinmetz (age 26), a cobbler (Schuhmacher), with his wife and 2 children.

Johann Peter Steinmetz, a farmer, and his wife Anna Maria arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 13 September 1766 aboard the galliot Die Perle under the command of Skipper Thomson.

They settled in the Volga German colony of Walter on 10 September 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 98 along with their son Johannes (age one-week).

In 1858-1859, descendants of this Steinmetz family moved to the daughter colony of Brunnental.

The Facius list records that Johannes Steinmetz came from the German village of Hegeberg. The 1767 census records that Johann Peter Steinmitz came from the German village of Ekebergen [sic] in the region of Hanau.
