Discussion & Documentation:

Johannes Jacob Weiss, son of Johannes Adam Weiss & Eva Altvatter, was born 13 January 1733 in Glashofen. The family there has been traced back to his great-great-grandparents in 1600, the earliest records located for this church.

Jakob Weiss, a carpenter (Zimmermann), his wife, his mother-in-law, and his sister-in-law immigrated to Denmark (Schleswig-Holstein), arriving in Flensburg on 26 June 1762. They left the Danish colonies on 8 June 1763 and joined the migration to Russia.

Jakob Weiss and his family settled in the Volga German colony of Shcherbakovka on 15 June 1765. They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 22.

The 1767 census records that Jakob Weiss came from the German village of Glashofen.

[Sometimes the descendants of this family and those of the Wesch family have been conflated, but they are two separate families.]
