Discussion & Documentation:

Further research is needed to confirm the connections proposed concerning this family.

Johannes Zier and his family (sons: Nikolaus, age 20; Johann Georg, age 17; Bartolomeus, age 11) are recorded on the 1798 census of Franzosen in Household No. Fz02.

The sons of this Johannes Zier are recorded on the 1834 censuses of Franzosen (Households 19 & 20) and Husaren (Households No. 9 & 36) and Schuck (Household No. 66) with the surname of Zeiger.

(1) Nikolaus Zeiger is recorded on the 1834 census of Franzosen in Household No. 19 along with a note that he relocated to the colony of Husaren. Nikolaus Zeiger and his family are recorded onthe 1834 census of Husaren in Household No. 9 along with a note that he arrived in Husaren from Franzosen in 1825.

(2) Georg Zeiger and his family are recorded on the 1834 census of Husaren in Household No. 36.

(3) Bartel [sic] Zeiger is recorded on the 1834 census of Franzosen in Household No. 20 along with a note that he relocated to the colony of Schuck. Bartel [sic] Zeiger and his family are recorded on the 1834 census of Schuck in Household No. 66 along with a note that he arrived in Schuck from Franzosen in 1828.

The Johannes Zier recorded above in Franzosen in 1798 is believed to be the same person as Johann Siehr, a craftsman (Handwerker), and his family who settled in the Volga German colony of Mariental on 14 June 1766. They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Households No. 34 & 35.

The 1767 census records that Johann Siehr came from the German village of Merzig in the Kurtrier region.

The descendents of Bartel Zeigler that came from the colony of Schuck to Canada use the surname Zieger.
