Johann Christian Ziegler, a dyer, his wife Margaretha Elisabeth (and children (Johann Isaak, age 13; Anna Christina, age 9) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 21 July 1766 aboard a snow-brig named Mercurius under the command of Skipper Christian Heinrich Abelßen.

His widow and children are recorded on the 1767 census of Schäfer in Household No. 49 along with his widow's new husband Klaus Friedrich Hildebrant.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Johann Christian Ziegler came from the German region of Sachsen (Saxony). The 1767 census records that Margaretha Elisabetha Ziegler came from the German village of Zella in the region of Sachsen (Saxony).

There are no known suriving male lines of this Ziegler family among the Volga German colonies.
