Discussion & Documentation

Johann Georg Zilg, his wife Katharina, and sons (Johann, age 6; Valentin, age 3) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 19 July 1766 aboard the barque named Fortitudo under the command of Skipper John Scott.

They settled in the Volga German colony of Norka on 15 August 1767 where they are recorded on the 1767 census in Household No. 145.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Johann Georg Zilg was a farmer while the 1767 census records that he was a craftsman (Handwerker).

In 1798, Johann Heinrich Zilg moved from Norka to Kolb.

Both documents record that Johann Georg Zilg came from the German district of Hessen.
