Chymkent, Turkestan Region, Kazakhstan

Shymkent was founded in the twelfth century to protect the town of Sayram which was located on the Silk Road. Today it is located near the border of Uzbekistan.

It was renamed to Chernyaev in 1914 and back to Shymkent in 1924.

Volga German families settled in and around Shymkent following the 1956 release from the Special Settlements which had been set up following the 1941 Deportation.
