Monte Leon Brethauer, son of Samuel Brethauer & Beatrice Mary Helzer, was born 8 April 1931 in Portland, Oregon. He grew up in Portland and attended Jefferson High School. He went on to play football for the University of Oregon Ducks.

After college, Brethauer was selected by the Baltimore Colts in the 1953 National Football League draft and played two seasons (1953 and 1955) as punter and wide receiver. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and missed the 1954 season.

He died 14 October 1994 in Portland, Oregon.

Monte's parents immigrated to the United States in 1903 from the Volga German colony of Walter.
