Andre Geim, winner of the Nobel Prize in physics, was born 21 October 1958 in Sochi, Russia, to Konstantin Geim and Nina Baier, both of whom are engineers. He was educated at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) and the Institute of Solid State Physics of the Russian Academy of Science.
In 2000, Dr. Geim was awarded the Ig Nobel Prize in Physics along with Michael Berry. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2010 jointly with Konstantin Novoselov for his work on the two-dimensional material graphene. That same year, he was knighted in the Netherlands. He is a professor at the Manchester Centre for Mesoscience and Nanotechnology of the University of Manchester in England.
Dr. Geim's Volga German ancestors came from the colony of Kamenka where his grandfather Alois served as teacher (Schulmeister). Among the Volga German colonies the surname was most commonly Heim.
