Judith Knittel, daughter of Adolph John Knittel & Anna Elizabeth Voos, was born 20 January 1944. She married Mark V. Meierhenry.

She received her Bachelor of Science in 1966, Master's in English in 1968, and Juris Doctor in 1977 - all from the University of South Dakota. She practiced law in Vermillion, South Dakota.

On 16 December 1988, South Dakota Governor George S. Mickelson appointed her to the Second Circuit Court, and she became the presiding judge in 1997.

In November 2002, Governor Bill Janklow appointed her as the first woman to serve on the South Dakota Supreme Court. She served until her retirement in June 2011.

Judge Meierhenry's Volga German ancestors come from the colony of Merkel.
