Tobias Schmunk was born 23 May 1893 in the German village of Ruhetal in the Rostov District of southern Russia. His family had relocated there from the Volga German colony of Dobrinka.
He studied theology at the University of Dorpat (today in Estonia) and was ordained in 1921.
Pastor Schmunk had married in 1917 to Rosalie Scholl (who was from the Black Sea colonies). They immigrated to the United States, arriving on 13 May 1922 in New York City aboard the SS Reliance.
He served as pastor in Fort Morgan, Colorado (Immanuel Lutheran Church); Walla Walla, Washington; Hardin, Montana; and Gering, Nebraska (Zion United Church of Christ).
His wife Rosalie died 5 January 1954. He remarried to Hannah Bentel Wagner on 22 September 1954. She died on 1 July 1970.
Tobias remarried to Clara D. Lange on 6 June 1971 in Greeley, Colorado.
Rev. Schmunk served as visiting pastor at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Greeley. He died in October 1971 at his home in Greeley. He is buried in the Riverside Cemetery in Fort Morgan, Colorado.
