Juan José Castelli, named after an Argentine lawyer (1764-1812) who was one of the leaders of the May Revolution, was founded in 1928 in the Province of Chaco, although it was not officially recognized until the railroad arrived on 17 June 1936.
In June 1931, 320 Volga German families (around 2,300 people) from La Pampa Province resettled there. They were attempting to escape the bad harvests and economic problems of that region. They came to Chaco and became involved in cotton cultivation.
