Discussion & Documentation

Anton Bäcker, son of Georg Bäcker, was born in Ronshausen on 3 November 1705. He married there to Anna Barbara Bachman, daughter of Georg Bachman, on 15 August 1728. She died in Ronshausen on 4 July 1761. They have one known son, Johann Georg, who was born in about 1729. He married Elisabetha Wingold, the daughter of Caspar Georg Wingold, on 19 April 1751, and they have two known children: (1) Johannes, born 11 May 1752, and (2) Elisabeth, born 24 November 1761.

Anton, his son, and his son's family immigrated to Russia. Along the way, Anton married on 11 May 1766 in Büdingen to widow Maria Catharina Peuscher.

This Bäcker family arrived from Lübeck at the port in Oranienbaum aboard a ship under the command of skipper John Scott on 29 August 1766: Georg Becker, his wife Elisabeth, and children (Johann, age 16; Elisabeth, age 5) and Anton Becker and his new wife Katharina [Peuscher].

Wilhelm Bäcker from Ronshausen is recorded on the parish register of Büdingen marrying Anna Eva Moritz from Sterckels on 7 May 1766. They arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 9 August 1766 aboard the Russian galliot Strelna under the command of Skipper Lieutenant Sornev. The relationship of this Wilhelm Bäcker to Anton Bäcker is unknown at this time. Wilhelm Bäcker evidently does not survive the journey from Oranienbaum to the Volga German colonies, because Anna Eva Moritz is recorded on the 1767 census of Norka married to Wilhelm Schreiber, who had also come from the German village of Ronshausen.

Anton Bäcker (age 50 [should be 70?]), his wife Anna Maria, and children (Elisabeth, age 5; Anton, age 1) are recorded on the 1775 census of Norka in Household No. 34.

The widow of Anton Becker and their children (Anton, age 25; Johann Heinrich, age 21) are recorded on the 1798 census of Norka in Household No. Nr057.

Anton Becker and his brother Heinrich are recorded on the 1811 census of Norka in Household No. 57 along with a note that Heinrich relocated to the colony of Kolb.

Heinrich Becker from Norka and his son are recorded on the 1811 census of Kolb in Household No. 25 along with a note that Heinrich had arrived in Kolb from Norka in 1808.

Heinrich Becker and his family are recorded on the 1834 census of Kolb in Household No. 82.

The death of Heinrich Becker in 1854 is recorded on the 1857 census of Kolb in Household No. 102.

Friedrich Becker, son of Heinrich Becker, and his family are recorded on the 1857 census of Kolb in Household No. 102 and on the 1857 census of Brunnental.

Through the years, this surname has taken a variety of spellings including Backer, Becker, and Baker.

This is one of four apparently unrelated Bäcker families that settled in Norka.
