Michael Adam, a farmer, and his family settled in the Volga German colony of Merkel on 28 August 1766.  Michael, his wife, and his younger children are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 3. An older son, Christoph is recorded in Household No. 37.

The 1767 census records that the Adam family came from the German village of Neuburg in Württemberg.
